Home Composting
Composting is an excellent way to recycle organic waste that would otherwise be put in the bin. There are a number of ways you can give it a go:
Compost bins and heaps Great for garden waste, uncooked vegetable and fruit scraps from the kitchen. Produces compost and mulch useful in the garden.
Wormeries Just add cooked and uncooked vegetable, fruit scraps and some small amounts of meat scraps. The worms produce fine compost and a liquid plant feed that can be used to feed pot plants and hanging baskets.
Digesters (Green Cone) If you don't need compost this is ideal. All kitchen scraps and plate scrapings, uncooked or cooked, including meat, fish, bones, dairy products and fruit and vegetable remains can be added. All are broken down into the natural components water, carbon dioxide and nutrients.
What's Best For You?
Before you choose the composting method to suit you think about:
- The materials you have available - to produce a general purpose mulch or compost you need to have a good amount of mixed garden waste available all year round
- The size and type of your garden - Smaller or grassed gardens may not produce enough waste to make good quantities of compost.
- How you will use your compost - If you grow houseplants or lots of greenhouse plants then the nutrient rich liquid and the fine compost produced by wormeries will be best for you.
- If you have no use for compost - but want to do your bit a Green Cone will work best for you.
- The number of people in your household - the more people in your home the bigger the composter!
